Amber & Nathan's Excellent Weekend Adventure
Hello! Happy Labor Day!
On Saturday, Nathan & I got up and decided to hop in the car for a weekend roadtrip. We had no destination, no hotel reservations, nothing. Not to mention that my pregnant body no longer 'hops' into action and we were trying to travel with a toddler.
Anyway, we drove down to Starlight, IN and visited the Huber Orchard. If you haven't been, it's a good place to stop. It's more than just an orchard; it's a farm, winery, and restaurant too. They also have a little homemade ice cream shop with the BEST pumpkin ice cream I've ever had. We ate at the restaurant too and had good 'ole home cookin'.... you know-- fried chicken, corn on the cob, fried biscuits and apple butter, chicken n' dumplings, etc. Yum! I know, you're thinking that a lot of our trips revolve around food. You're right; some people would say we have a "problem."
Then we drove and found a hotel that night along the Ohio River outside of Louisville. We got Keegan in the swimming pool for the first time ever and he enjoyed it. While in Louisville, we spent a lot of time for Nathan in the Bass Pro Shop (HUGE sporting goods store), went to the Falls of the Ohio State Park and hiked on their giant fossil bed, took some scenic drives, and visited the Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen place, twice!
Now, if you've never been to the Pie Kitchen place, it is a MUST-DO if you are ever near Louisville. There are 9 locations and one is right off I65 near Jeffersonville, which makes it perfect to stop at anytime you're headed south for any reason. Here is their website: http://www.piekitchen.com/. I'm not kidding, it was fabulous. Wonderful desserts and reasonably priced. You can do carry-out, or sit there and eat like it's a restaurant. I would marry the Pie Kitchen if I could. Seriously.
Also, here are the top 5 lessons learned from this trip.
1. Lots of McDonald's orange soda + lots of time on curvy roads = 2 year old throwing up in backseat of car
2. If you keep an 'emergency outfit' in the car for your child (as a result of #1 above), make sure that it is something you wouldn't be embarassed to see them in. Emergencies do happen and you might really need to put your kid in it.
3. Cameras without batteries do not take pictures.
4. If you are going to go fishing in a river, look for warning signs first. Perhaps there is one that states something about raw sewage in the water. (tribute to Nathan)
5. If you see people defecating in public places, do not judge. Perhaps the bathroom facility 20 feet behind them is too icky to use.
Finally, here are some photos from our trip. Enjoy!
