Dress My Nest!
I love the show Dress My Nest (link). Basically, a fun designer named Thom Filicia goes to someone's house and redecorates a room for them. To help understand the person's style, Thom has the person show 6 personal items that they choose from their home. The first 3 are items from their wardrobe that they love. The other 3 items are 3 personal items (like a sentimental item or just something that they love). Thom takes elements from these items to figure out your style. Then he incorporates the item's attributes into the space somehow. He uses things the person already loves as his muse to decorate their space. He's fabulous and creative.
I'm currently in the brainstorming process of redecorating my first floor (kitchen, living room, front room, & bathroom). So, Thom, if you are reading this-- please come to my house!! I've been thinking about what my 6 items would be.
Here are the 3 from my wardrobe:
#1) My Anthropologie purse. I love the store Anthropologie(link), thanks to Jennifer for introducing it to me. I love the way this purse feels (very soft leather) and I love the texture along with the details. The liner inside is fun too; I love when things have a fun liner even if I'm the only one who sees it.
#2) My Anthropologie hat. What I love about this hat is that it combines so many different textures and fabrics all on the same piece and they all go together. Sort of eclectic which is how I would describe my taste. I am sort of self conscious when I wear this hat. It's a little big for my head and a little more risky than what I would typically wear. It didn't help when my brother started singing, "Oops, I did it again!" when I had it on once; apparently it was a little too "Brittany Spears." :) I will wear it anyway!
#3) This skirt from Macy's. What I love about this skirt are the detailed flowers that come up from it creating extra texture.
It's way more fun when you see it with a yellow shirt:
Now, for my 3 personal items not from my wardrobe....
#1) Cat cookie jar. I know, you're thinking, "THAT thing?" What I love about this cookie jar is that it belonged to my grandma. She got it at her wedding shower in the 1940's and it sat on her counter ever since. My grandma is still living but allowed me to take this cookie jar for my kitchen. It's just funky enough to be fun and reminds me of my grandma.
#2) My great-grandma's old phone. I have this sitting on a table in my house; how fun is this? This belonged to my great-grandma Ashton and I just think it's downright cool. When I was little my dad got this phone to work and we'd actually use it now and then just for fun.
#3). Say cheese! I found this old camera at an antique show and had to have it. I love photography and this was the perfect thing for my house. Love it!

Thom would take the textures, styles, and sentiment of these items and turn it into something fabulous. I hope to do the same on a lower budget than his! :) I look forward to showing you photos of a new downstairs in the next several months..... or more!
