Addicted to Netflix
Nathan has graciously allowed me to be in charge of our Netflix queue. I guess that makes me his 'Queue-T Pie", right? Sure, he'll add some occasional 'man movies', but for the most part Netflix is my job. I've picked some really, really bad ones before..... so bad that we turned them off mid-movie. The movie Nothing Like The Holidays comes to mind. However, I'd like to brag by saying I'm on a roll right now with picking winners. We're watching a lot of old Chevy Chase & Steve Martin movies.
So, what's in your queue? Feel free to send me your suggestions. I don't get anything above a PG-13 rating. You know, because I'm so young and naive still.
Here are some good ones we've watched recently, along with the descriptions I copied straight from Netflix:
All of Me - 1984
Just before stubborn millionaire Edwina Cutwater (Lily Tomlin) dies, she asks her uptight lawyer, Roger Cobb (Steve Martin), to amend her will so that her soul will pass to the young, vibrant Terry Hoskins (Victoria Tennant) -- but the spiritual transference goes awry. Edwina enters Roger's body instead, forcing him to battle Edwina for control of his own being. Director Carl Reiner's comedy nabbed Golden Globe nominations for Martin and Tomlin. PG.
Fletch- 1985 (great!)
Chevy Chase enjoys his finest hour playing reporter Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher, a fast-talking master of disguise who poses as a derelict to uncover a story about drug dealers. When a wealthy businessman offers Fletch a fortune to murder him before a terminal illness takes hold, Fletch works the scenario in hilarious style until he gets an exclusive that knocks his editor's socks off. Tim Matheson and Geena Davis co-star.
Fletch Lives- 1989 (loved it)
Chevy Chase reprises his role as Fletch, the newspaper reporter with a penchant for disguises. In this sequel, Fletch is a fish out of water in small-town Louisiana, where he's checking out a tumbledown mansion he's inherited. When a woman he flirts with turns up dead, Fletch becomes a suspect and must find the killer and clear his name. In the meantime, he's got some serious home-ownership issues, such as termites and weird neighbors!
Funny Farm- 1988
Sportswriter Andy Farmer (Chevy Chase) and his schoolteacher wife, Elizabeth (Madolyn Smith), move away from the big-city hustle bustle to the seclusion of the country so that Andy can write a novel. Surrounded by quirky locals and strange customs, the Farmers quickly learn that country life is anything but quiet, and that life in their pastoral new home is just a series of wacky events waiting to happen.
Spies Like Us-1985
In director John Landis's slapstick comedy of errant espionage, it's up to Emmett (Chevy Chase) and Austin (Dan Aykroyd) -- two CIA spies who have never left their boring offices in Washington, D.C. -- to save the world from nuclear disaster. Trouble begins when the duo enters the Soviet Union via Afghanistan while trying to avoid detection by the Russian army and rival spies. Look for Terry Gilliam, Sam Raimi and Joel Coen in cameos.
Seems Like Old Times- 1980
When writer Nick Gardenia (Chevy Chase) is kidnapped from his coastal California home and forced to rob a bank, his quiet, mundane life is suddenly thrown into tumult. Now a felon and fugitive, Nick seeks help from an unlikely source: his ex-wife (Goldie Hawn). She's a public defender who's remarried to prosecutor Ira Parks (Charles Grodin), and he's understandably upset over Nick's unannounced visit. Jay Sandrich directs Neil Simon's script.
Maverick- 1994
Yes, it's an old TV show transformed into a movie. But it has a script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), was directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) and stars Jodie Foster, James Garner and Mel Gibson as gamblin' man Bret Maverick (a role Garner originated on the tube). Giddy up for some goofy, gamblin' fun.
Roxanne- 1987
Fearless small-town firefighter C.D. Bales (Steve Martin) becomes smitten with beautiful stargazer Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah) but is self-conscious about his exceedingly long proboscis. The fair maiden has also captured the fancy of C.D.'s handsome but tongue-tied chum Chris (Rick Rossovich). C.D. thinks he's too ugly to snag Roxanne's heart, so he woos her vicariously by supplying his rival with florid sentiments and poignant poetry.
Four Christmases- 2008
Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon teams up with Vince Vaughn for this romantic comedy that casts them as a dating couple who are forced to spend their first Christmas together visiting each of their four divorced parents -- in a single day. Seth Gordon directs an all-star cast that includes Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen, Dwight Yoakam, Carol Kane, Jon Favreau and Tim McGraw.
Armed & Dangerous - 1986
Mark Lester directs this slapstick comedy about two down-and-out men, ex-cop Frank Dooley (John Candy) and disbarred lawyer Norman Kane (Eugene Levy), who try their bungling hands at private security and wind up facing the wrath of their new employer, Michael Carlino (Robert Loggia), a mob boss running a smuggling scam that the two unwittingly uncover. Meg Ryan also stars.
The Man - 2005 (Hilarious!!!)
Special agent Derrick Vann (Samuel L. Jackson), a hard-nosed Fed, and Andy Fidler (Eugene Levy), a milquetoast salesman, might have been brought together by accident. But they make up an unlikely crime-fighting team in this hilarious comedy. The two must work together to hunt down a dangerous man who might be responsible for the death of Vann's longtime partner. But can straitlaced Fidler rise to the occasion?
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid- 1982 (this was interesting because they spliced together old movies from the 40's & 50s)
Gumshoe Rigby Reardon (Steve Martin) takes on the case of a missing cheese maker/scientist when the man's shapely daughter, Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward), hires the detective to investigate. In this film-noir spoof directed by Carl Reiner, Reardon interacts with a host of Tinseltown legends -- including Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner and Joan Crawford -- in clips intercut from vintage detective films.
