The "M" Word

So, I've been in a special love relationship for about 2 years now. He's short, dark, and we just sort of "click". When I'm with him, it's like I see the whole world through rose colored glasses, or maybe through a clear lens, I should say. During those special moments where I'm holding him in my tight embrace, I'm free to see the world as I'd like to. We zoom here, there, and everywhere. He challenges me to use my imagination. He flashes me, and we laugh together. Who is this lover, you ask? Why, it's my Canon 40D.

Isn't he handsome?

Now, if you know me well-- you know that I have a fear of commitment. Nathan knows this about me; I told him on our first date that "this is not a date" and that we were "just friends." I do not like to commit. So, I've been having a hard time with my new lover to use the "M" word. You know, "M....M....M...." "MANUAL." There, I said it. I need to learn to shoot in m... m... manual. Now, that's a commitment.

For those of you non-camera people, shooting in manual involves controlling & setting your own exposure, manually. That means you are choosing your aperture, your shutter speed, and your ISO. In involves learning about depth of field, lighting, and what all of those darn buttons are for on your fancy new camera. Ultimately, the goal is to someday be smarter than your camera. It can take years to learn and I started Saturday. So, please book your photo shoots with me starting in the year 2018.

So, last Saturday I had the amazing privilege to attend a photography workshop hosted by my talented photographer friend, Kiera (link). Kiera taught us all about exposure and I was blown away by how much there was to learn once I turn my camera to m...m...m.... manual.

Kiera is a great teacher and she is too cute. She had a personalized little box for each of us, filled with goodies. She even gave us each a nice notepad with our initial on the front. She thought of everything.
Ignore the fact that this picture is dark and out of focus (hello, learner here!)-- but I wanted you to see how super cute her gift boxes were. They had trail mix, a cute tin, a personal note, pens/pencils, and more!
We spent some time outside taking a picture of this scarf on the fence. Sounds easy, I know. Then you realize you have figure out what number your fstop (aperture) should be set to and what your shutter speed should be and what the heck is your ISO? It was harder than imagined for a newbie like me.
I think the people driving on the street got a kick out of seeing this:
Our family went to the zoo the next day and stopped by their tropical gardens. I got to take some practice shots on m...m... manual. I had several outtakes, including ones that looked like my lens cap was still on.
Here were a few of my favorites. Sort of the best of the worst.
I don't love this picture, but I loved this fun, fuzzy flower:
So, here is my commitment. Before all my blog readers and stalkers, I, Amber Waves of Grain, promise to have and to hold my Canon 40D in holy m... m.... m..... MANUAL settings! Think of me for your 2018 events!

You crack me up! My brother has been trying to teach me about all this stuff for a couple years now. I've got f-stops/aperture down, but I'm still pretty lost on, well, basically everything else. :) Good luck! That camera class sounds awesome! Do you think she'll take new students?

I am right there with you! I am learning manual as we speak and some days it is a little overwhelming! But I am hoping it will one day become second nature to me.
