Pat & Placenta Previa

Last night we had a little scare with baby Pat. That's right, I said Pat.

I had some symptoms that I won't share in graphic detail here. Just use your imagination. So, the doctor sent me to the hospital last night.

We had a very long and thorough ultrasound done and I was diagnosed with having Placenta Previa (link) and an abruption. (thanks, Becca, for telling me what was what!) From what I understand, my placenta & uterus are tearing apart from one another. And, my placenta is covering my cervix and it shouldn't be. The danger in this is that the baby may not be getting enough blood and/or oxygen. We were at the hospital a few hours and they reluctantly let me come home. I'm just keeping watch of my symptoms and making sure they don't worsen or I'll have to go back.

Placenta Previa can either resolve itself OR continue through my pregnancy. Women who have Placenta Previa at delivery time have to have a C-section. So, I'm praying that mine is resolved before then... which is very possible.

For now, I'm supposed to be resting. No lifting and so forth (sure, that's easy with 2 small children.....right?!). I believe they used the words "taking it easy." Um, clearly the people who came up with those instructions were not mothers of toddlers. Luckily it's a weekend so Nathan is home to really help out.

On another note.... let's talk about Pat. Until we have a gender, our precious little baby is a Pat. During our 10 week ultrasound when it was too early to determine gender, my doctor said, "I have a guess to the gender based on this early ultrasound. Do you want me to tell you my guess?". I had to tell her no since Nathan wasn't there. But, we totally read into it. We figured if she was able to have a guess so early, that it probably meant there was a visible male-part. We were convinced it was a boy. Then last night the ultrasound tech could find nothing visible.... and her guess was that it was a girl. We'll find out in our real ultrasound in mid-October when the baby is big enough to see more detail. Until then, it's Pat.

Here's last night's ultrasound. I can't figure out how to get it right-side-up so just turn your monitor on its' side.
The good news is that I got some new hospital socks out of the deal. They have traction on both sides. They are hip!!!!!

Praying for you!

Placental previa = placenta covering the cervix

Placental abruption = when the placenta tears away from the uterus, either partially or completely.

Previa without the abruption isn't nearly as serious. Abruption can be very serious, so take that not lifting thing and taking it easy seriously!!! Becca's orders.

Wow! I am so sorry you had such a scary night! I will be praying that it will heal. Take very seriously the "take it easy" advice. Difficult I know but very necessary. I would love to help out if you need anything. Dinner? Take the kids for an afternoon. Or watch them at your house. You can try taking Vitamin E to help the abruption part heal. It is very effective.
